- Reclaim auto-off lights when using turbo timer.
Problem: For M3 Supra Turbo owners, turbo timer use will defeat
the auto-off feature of the headlight/marker lights. Normally,
lights left on will be turned off with the removal of the key.
Solution: Reroute the lights trigger wire so they go off when
the key is removed, even if the turbo timer keeps the car running.
Soluiton by: Dave T. '87 Supra Turbo stage VII; Waltham MA, USA.
Tip Author: Jeff M. '89 Supra Turbo stage III+; Sunnyvale CA, USA.
Parts needed:
3 feet of 18-22 AWG insulated wire.
Wire crimps/connectors.
Tools:
Phillips screwdriver
Electric Tape
Wire cutter/stripper.
Procedure for M3 as currently known:
(Tested on a '87T and a '89T)
Remove the interior panel under the steering column.
There are corner screws, and you need to remove 2 screws
in the hood-open latch. Remove the light socket after the
panel is off, place the panel out of the way.
Locate a Light Blue control box up in the dash cavity.
You should be able to read the embossed letters "Headlight
retractor control" or something like that.
Remove the wiring harness from that box. Just press the tab
while pulling it out. Locate the wire on this harness which
is black with a red stripe.
Cut this wire, leaving a 5" tail on the plug. Strip 1/4" of
this tail. On the dash-end of the wire, place a cap-style
crimp connector on it to protect the wire end and tuck it
back in the dash, you will not use this end of the wire.
Take you 3' wire, and strip one end of it, 1/4". Use a
barrel or cap style connector and join the box-tail to this
3' wire 'jumper'.
Now locate the theft deterent computer. It's straigt above
the steering column, but not attached to it. It's high up.
You need to see the wiring harness comming out of that computer.
It's a clean 1/2" diameter bundle of wires out of that plug. Follow
the wire bundle closer to the bottom. It will run near the steering
column. Push back the black sheilding to expose the bundle.
Locate the thin wire (aprox. 20 AWG) which is blue with a ORANGE
stripe. (There is one very close with a red stripe, that's not it!)
Tug it a little to seperate it from the bundle, but don't break, cut,
or strip it yet. Let's call this wire #2.
Take the 3' jumper wire, and string it over near the wire #2. See how
much of a jumper you need to maintain clearence, and trim off the
loose
end to have a resonable length. Now strip 1/4" off the end of the
jumper.
Dispose of the jumper part you cut off.
Using a tap-style wire connecor, connect the jumper to the wire #2.
Now your connection should look like three wires going into the
connector.

#2 J
This is the tap-style connector. #2 goes thru the connector. J, the
jumper wire only pokes in the connector, but does not go thru it. This
allows #2 to remain in it's old circuit undisturbed, while J can tap
in
easily. xx is the little snap cover you close after you squeeze the
connector
tight, driving the little piece of metal to pierce the wires.
Ok, that's about it. Turn on the car, then the headlights. See that
they
still go off by themselves regardless if the turbo timer is on. They
will not go 'down', but they will turn 'off'. Cool huh?
Replace the lower cover, make sure the hood-latch is attached to it.
Enjoy the increased safety of your Supra.
